David Nelson 1983-1997
David Nelson was a member of the Democratic Party who served as a New Bedford City Councilor from 1970-1976, and was City Council President in 1974. He was a State Representative for the 12th Bristol District from 1979-1983.

Nelson was appointed by Governor Dukakis to serve as Sheriff in 1983 after Sheriff Dubrowksi’s retirement. He was then elected in 1984 after a 5-way primary to finish the term. He ran unopposed in 1986, and won by a landslide in 1992. He resigned and retired in 1997.
